It goes without saying that you should take good care of your passport (especially as some driver’s licenses will not be permissible as airport ID next year). But when a hotel asks you to hand yours over at check-in, you might not think that you’re putting it at risk. In fact, if you don’t get it right back, you are.
In , Griff Rhys Jones shares a tale that shows just how wrong this can go. It involves a visit to the Italian island of Ponza, a passport handed over at check-in and the underperforming Italian postal service. In the end, Jones has this to say: “Never again will I hand [my passport] over at a hotel without taking it straight back.”
