I know a ton of people are afraid to fly or get really nervous in turbulence. I used to be so scared that you couldn’t get me on a plane for three years. But that was 25 years ago, and I’ve been averaging three flights a week since.
Even though I overcame my fear of flying, for a while I would still get nervous when we hit moderate to severe turbulence (the latter doesn’t happen very often). Since then, I’ve learned to be calm, and a big part of that was the time a pilot told me to think of chops on a flight like going down a bumpy road in a car.
What made me even calmer was a flight attendant later telling me that there’s no point getting scared unless you see multiple nervous flight attendants—and if you do, it’s time to say your . Fortunately, I haven’t witnessed that yet, and I pray I never do.
