Earlier this month, the popular crowd-sourcing traffic app Waze launched a carpool component. is different from Uber and Lyft’s carpool services in that it doesn’t take commission. Instead, passengers chip in just enough to cover the gas. It’s pretty cool. Users need to download a separate app (from the basic Waze app) and link to their Google accounts to show who they are (Google owns Waze).

It’s easy to use: You just tell Carpool where you live and work and they match you with a fellow Wazer going your way. Payment is set in advance based on distance. When the ride is over, Carpool transfers it from rider to driver.

and the , where you can download the app. There’s one app for drivers and one for riders.
