Using Points for Presents – Advice for a Reader

As one of 12 American Express Membership Rewards experts in the program, I found a reader who needed help finding ways to use their Membership Rewards points on holiday presents. James M. from Los Angeles asked me this:

“I would love to find some great, not terribly expensive, holiday deal for me and my two kids — ages 11 and 14. Any ideas?”

I looked through AMEX’s extensive Rewards Catalog and came up with a couple things I think would be great ideas for James and his kids.

 47,230 Points

If you’ve got the points to blow, these are the hottest headphones out there – your kids will be surprised that you know what they are, and I know my nieces and nephews like to plug in and do their own thing. This will also help you avoid having to listen to One Direction’s music the whole time if you take the kids on a road trip.

– 5,000 – 30,000 points

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something slower paced that’s going to give you a chance to connect with your kids, consider a train trip. And with the range of available gift cards offered in the Member Rewards Catalog, even if you don’t have a ton of points you can still get a little bit to put towards a very different but really fun vacation.
