TaxiTaxi Etiquette Abroad
In America, we always jump in the back seat of a taxi but in some countries, like Ireland and Australia, that’s not always how it’s done. I was recently in the back seat of a taxi in Ireland when I realized that I should have been sitting in the front seat. I apologized to the driver—“No worries!” he said—and he pulled over to the side of the road so I could jump in the front. Sitting in the front seat is a lot more social, and the views are way better from up there, anyway.

A good way to tell if you should sit in the front seat or not is to simply observe the locals or ask around. You can also quickly glance at the front passenger seat to see if the driver has their belongings on the seat. If he/she does, then sit in the back.

haha, I ALWAYS sit in the back seat here in Ireland! Sometimes I get ‘the look’, but hey, it’s Ireland: “Ah sure, it’s grand.” Plus, the driver is going to talk your ear off no matter where you sit…

HI Johnny, thanks for that, I thought you’d like a little insider tip from a Dubliner – it is perfectly fine for a lady travelling on her own to sit in the back seat, in fact some taxi drivers prefer it. Whenever I travel with my husband or a group of people, then there will always be one person up front with the driver. Whether you’re in the back or the front, they will still talk your ear off – in a good way :)
