Make Sure Your Directions Are Correct (Especially to Mount Rushmore)
Heading to Mount Rushmore this summer? TODAY and a number of other publications that Google Maps has had trouble directing some drivers to Mount Rushmore. “The problem, explains the , is partly computer and partly human error.”
The reported trouble revolves around the fact that a number of options pop up when you go to input “Mount Rushmore” into the app. “Mount Rushmore National Memorial,” says TODAY, works just fine, but other options—like “Mount Rushmore, SD”—direct drivers to different locations. Storm Mountain Center, for example, a Methodist retreat, has received a number of drivers who happened to choose the wrong Mount Rushmore in Google Maps.
Checking Google Maps myself, I found the correct item (“Mount Rushmore National Memorial”) to be the clear first choice when searching “Mount Rushmore.” When I tried “Mt. Rushmore” instead, the best item that came up redirected to “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”—and so the whole thing seemed to be working fine.
So, the problem may well have been addressed. It affected a tiny percentage of Mount Rushmore visitors to begin with. But if you’ll be traveling to Mount Rushmore in the near future, it’s probably helpful to be aware of what happened—and to know . In the bigger picture, make sure to be very specific when inputing a destination in Google Maps, Waze, Uber, Lyft, and the rest. They’re close, but they’re not perfect!
