Travel Tip of the Day: Hawaii’s Civil Defense Siren Test

Hawaii’s Civil Defense Siren Test
I just returned from Hawaii, where for the first time in more than 20 visits to Hawaii, I heard the Civil Defense siren test. and I had no idea what the blaring alarm was exactly, but knew it was either a test or a sign of something not good—like a tsunami. Luckily, we were in our hotel room; otherwise I would made a beeline from the beach to the hills.

It turns out that the whole state of Hawaii has a test at 11:45 am on the first Friday of every month (I wish someone had told me). , “the siren test is a steady one minute tone on all sirens. The steady tone is used to alert the public to any emergency that may pose a threat to life and property. Besides natural hazards, the Emergency Alert System could be used for terrorist incidents or acts of war.”

The above I took with my phone gives you an idea of how loud it is. Check out more info (same link as above).

  1. Jeez, Johnnie… I’d rather see Natalie!

  2. GOOD JOB , THANK YOU VERY MUCH

  3. I thought EVERY city in America had civil defense tests once a month. Ours is the first Wednesday of the month and it is VERY loud and long. Can’t imagine being surprised when hearing it somewhere else.
