Travel Tip of the Day: Beware the “Let’s Have a Drink” Scam

BudaBeware the “Let’s Have a Drink” Scam
I’ve been and there’s a good chance I’ll be scammed again since I travel so much. But my colleague Tom Brosnahan, in his travel guide from Turkey, just alerted me to the “Let’s have a drink” executed by men, which is a new take on a scam I know well (it was women who got us in Budapest).

As you’ll see, the “Let’s have a drink” scam leaves you paying a drink bill of hundreds or even thousands of dollars or Euros. As Tom explains, robbers love it because it’s easy, and their risk of identification, arrest, trial, and punishment is almost non-existent. That’s also why it happens in many cities (even London), and certainly in Istanbul. .

  1. RE, “Beware the “Let’s Have a Drink” Scam
this scam is as old as time. Had women approach me in Athens, and a male in Istanbul. The moment you insist on your hotel bar, or a coffee/tea house you already have been to, they take off.

  2. Happened to me in Rome. The guy offered to buy me a drink. Then came 2 ladies and 2 bottles of champagne then a bill for 500 euro. When I told them to call the police to straighten things out they told me to leave. I jet out of there faster than the road runner.

  3. Don’t talk to strangers, that is the things.

Most of these scam are really quick and fast.

That is what they aim for.

I get many of these on Facebook.

Strangers add me at friends and offer stupid stuffs.

    Thanks a lot for this.
