has been around for a couple of years, but it’s starting to get some momentum as a result of, I think, the rise of the social economy and telemarketers. No one likes giving their personal phone number out to strangers, companies or heck, even colleagues. That’s where Burner steps in.

Burner is billed as your “other” number. You can create as many numbers as you like and give them out only when you need to be in touch, but don’t want to stay connected forever. For example, you can designate numbers for your Uber account or a taxi driver.

Each number acts as a private line on an (not iPad or iPod Touch) or phone that you can keep indefinitely or “burn” when it’s no longer needed. Burner numbers are just like any other phone numbers and be used in all the usual ways of staying in touch, including calls, texts, and picture messages.

A few notes: Burner works only in the US (excluding Puerto Rico) and Canada. Burner is free for a trial period only and then you can get a plan starting at $1.99. All you have to do is pay for the voice and text credits, depending on how many you use. It does use your cell phone minutes. Area code availability varies and it’s not for 911 emergency services.
