ToothbrushEach Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from Patricia B. of Cambria, California, who says:

“Consider protecting toiletries, especially your toothbrush! Never thought I would need to be concerned about this but talked to someone who actually had this happen to him. Traveling in Europe a couple years ago, a friend forgot his jacket so returned to his room to collect it. The maid was cleaning the room so he walked in and discovered her in the bathroom—using his toothbrush to brush her teeth! I know this could have been worse as I know how I use used toothbrushes. Never imagined a stranger might want to use my battery toothbrush but I certainly am thinking twice about leaving it out any time I travel.”

Who knew this was a risk, even if a small one?! Thanks for the tip, Patricia!

There was a French and Saunders skit many years ago where Jennifer, as a housekeeper at a hotel, used the guest’s toothbrush to clean the toilet! That’s the last time I ever left my toothbrush out. Yes, I know it was a joke, but still…

Even at home, I like to cover my toothbrush to prevent air freshener, perfume, hair spray, etc. from landing on it. Usually I use a small paper cup. When traveling I like to cover my toothbrush with little shields that CVS use to carry. It has been at least three years since I found them and when I did, I bought all I could find. They are handy to stick over the brush head if you need to lay it on a counter on the plane or at the office (anywhere really). You can’t be too careful.
