Make Sure to Check the Tires of Your Rental Car

Make sure to check the tires of your rental carEach Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Roger D., who says:

“I’ve always inspected rental cars before taking them off the lot, taking pictures of any dents, dings or scratches. But, it never occurred to me to inspect the car’s tires. I was billed by Avis $100 to replace a tire with a nail in the sidewall. While I never saw the nail or lost tire pressure, I suspect that it had been in the tire prior to me renting the car. Check you tires! Also, the American Express supplemental insurance does not cover damage to tires.”

Good to know. Thanks, Roger!

  1. Off the mainland it pays to check the whole car over.
One late night in the rain in Puerto Rico it took me 3 cars before I deemed one safe enough to head out in. One had bald tires, one had a horrible shimmy & squeaky brakes. This was one of the top rental companies I might add.

  2. Thank you for this article. These tips are very useful. This type of detail is often overlooked. It is also important to make a price comparison but also to have all the information in hand before choosing a car rental company.
