Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Jo-Anne R., who says:
“We got a ticket for parking illegally in Italy one year after we’d been there. We didn’t click the link. It was for a $45 ticket that had increased with penalties to about $400. The ‘collection agency’ was in Chatsworth, CA, which was suspicious. We also didn’t call them. There are many scams from this one agency and I guess they hunt down rental company bills and frighten people with these collection bills.
What we did do was call the rental company in Italy directly and faxed them our agreement. They reviewed our rental and found that there were no outstanding tickets or tolls, which of course could happen but didn’t. They also did not know who the collection agency was. This happened to my dad and he did pay it, though it was only an $85 ticket for speeding. Again, no way of knowing if it was real or not.”
A great tip, reminiscent of this one. Thanks, Jo-Anne!
