Reader Travel Tip of the Day: Taxi Precautions

reader-travel-tip2Taxi Precautions
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader William S., who says:

“When taking a taxi in an unfamiliar place, pull up a map of your route using GPS on your smartphone. That way you get an idea if the taxi driver are ‘extending’ the ride. Even with a metered taxi, ask the driver for an approximate price before you accept the ride. Sometimes, they will just negotiate a fixed price with you, which can be great when traffic is heavy. Then when you get in, snap photos of the rate chart and the driver’s license (often posted in the back).

We have had drivers just hand money back at the end of the ride when we’ve questioned the fare and they’ve realized we kept a record of who they are. We have often been baffled by how they hit buttons and an extra few $$ pop up, both at the beginning and the end of a ride. But taking photos, then asking questions, seems to alleviate some of that.”

Sad to think that this is necessary, but it’s a precaution that could save you lots of hassle—and money. Thanks, William!
