reader-travel-tip2Is the Valet for Real?
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Aruna W., who left this comment on yesterday’s rental car tip:

“On the subject of valets and rentals, this is a story I have heard: An executive of a major US corporation arrives at his European hotel in his rental car at the end of a very long day of traveling. As soon as he parks the car, a guy comes up to him and says, ‘Do you want to valet park?’ [The] guest gives him the keys and the valet takes the car. Since it is not a very big hotel, he assumes that a valet ticket is not necessary.

The next morning, he goes looking for the valet parking attendant but [can’t] locate anyone. When [he inquires] at the front desk, [he learns] that they don’t have a valet parking service. Apparently, he was tricked into handing over the keys to a conman who happily drove away in the car. And since the car was not ‘stolen’ [and] instead [was] willingly given away, the insurance didn’t cover it.”

I’ve heard similar stories, so there’s definitely a good tip here. Before handing over your keys to the valet, make sure that they really are the valet!

as much as I don’t want to….I am not able to control my laughter. Definitely a funny story, but also a lesson.

My husband is also paranoid about this and I used to tell him that no conman can operate right in front of the entrance to a hotel…so make sure we drop off the car right at the entrance. That generally helps my husband calm down :-)
