UPDATE: , the NPS has updated its projection. Peak cherry blossom bloom in D.C. is now estimated to run from March 27 to March 31.
Each spring, Washington, D.C., draws visitors from all over looking to see its cherry blossom bloom. This year, it appears that peak bloom will arrive early. :
“News outlets report the National Park Service announced Thursday the projected peak date for the blossoms along the Tidal Basin will be March 17 to March 20. Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst says April 4 is the historical average date for peak bloom, which is the day when 70 percent of the blossoms are open in trees around the Tidal Basin.”
If you plan to visit D.C. for the bloom, make sure you consider the projection in your plans. In Japan, where the cherry blossom (sakura) season takes on even greater significance (and beauty), the bloom is in a few places (like Tokyo), as well.
