When there’s no line for an airplane lavatory, and it seems unoccupied, I recommend opening the door slowly. Why? Because sometimes people forget to lock it. I’ve only had the door opened on me once, fortunately, and that time it was because the sliding door handle was stuck and didn’t slide all the way—and when the door opened I was just washing my hands. Unfortunately, I’ve also opened the door to find people sitting on the toilet numerous times, and each time it was embarrassing for everyone. That’s why I now open the door ever so slowly, just in case.
