In honor of the new offer on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card (EXPIRED), here’s a post with options on how to redeem 100,000 British Airways Avios.
If you didn’t know, you can earn Avios with the British Airways Visa offer.
Also, just a reminder that you don’t have to fly British Airways with your Avios miles. You can fly any partner airline like American Airlines or Alaska Airlines, or any other airline that’s in the One World Alliance.
First Things First
As you all probably know, the British Airways award chart is distance-based. That means, the shorter the distance, the cheaper the award price. Domestic British Airways awards on American Airlines or any other domestic partner start at 7,500 Avios one-way. That’s not too bad although it used to be 4,500 Avios one-way. Flights on British Airways metal start at 4,000 Avios. That’s a steal!
BA will also impose higher fuel surcharges on most longer flights, but you can avoid those with shorter distance flights. In some cases, paying the fees can make sense for some people, especially if it’s on a first class flight, or if they are using the Travel Together Ticket.
British Airways doesn’t publish their award chart anymore, but you can check how much an award will be here:
You must have and log into your British Airways Avios account to search for and book award flights on the British Airways website.
In some cases, you will have to call BA at 1-800-452-1201 to make your booking, either because the airline (Alaska for example) isn’t shown on the British Airways website, or the British Airways website is just being glitchy. Happens with BA.
Ok onto some examples:
Over 20 Possible International Short Hops
My favorite way to use British Airways Avios is for short hops around the States or when I’m traveling abroad. And Avios award flights (international) start at just 4,500 (4,000 during non-peak) Avios. If you received the 100,000 Avios bonus from the British Airways Visa Signature® Card (EXPIRED), you could get over 20 one way award flights at this rate.
Domestic British Airways Avios Awards
You can fly from SFO to LAX for a measly 7,500 Avios and $5. Love it.
A couple more examples of economy one-way flights for 7,500 Avios & $5 are: ORD to CLT, AUS to DFW, or BOS to JFK/LGA.
I’ve flown Austin to Chicago for 7,500 Avios many times, and have no complaints.
International British Airways Avios Awards
You can also use your Avios for international short hops. Just make sure that you do a price comparison because sometimes you can find low-cost international carriers with competitive rates. Just watch out for the additional fees.
When we visited Dublin a couple of years ago, we flew from there to London for only 4,500 Avios and $14. You can even book this route during “off peak” season for only 4,000 Avios.
Another route that I’ve flown is Hong Kong to Phuket on Dragon Air (Cathay Pacific subsidiary). In economy, it’s only 10,000 Avios and $20. We flew in business class before the rates were increased to 20,000 Avios, but we really enjoyed it, so I would think about burning 20k Avios for that route again. Especially because flying in business class got us access to the Wing business class lounge, and it was a great spot to burn a couple of hours.
For those people who find themselves in South Africa (hopefully me soon), you can fly from Johannesburg to Capet Town for 7,500 (6,500 non-peak) Avios & $44 on Comair Air.
What I’m getting at is, no matter where you go in the world, it’s worth checking to see if you can use British Airways Avios for quick short-hop flights.
4 Roundtrip Flights to Hawaii with 100,000 British Airways Avios
Hawaii is a dream destination for many people, and Avios can help you get there easily and for cheap from the West Coast. If you’re not located on the West Coast, you will have to add a positioning flight.
It’s only 25,000 Avios for an economy roundtrip ticket from the West Coast to Hawaii. You can search and book American Airlines flights on the British Airways website.
Another option is to fly Alaska Airlines, which has a lot of flights to Hawaii. You can search for Alaska Airlines award availability on their , and then call British Airways at 1-800-452-1201 to make your booking.
1 – 2 Premium Class Flights with British Airways Avios
British Airways devalued their premium cabin flights, so it can be very expensive to fly British Airways first class with Avios. BA also imposes major fuel surcharges on long haul flights, so the cash required will be significant. But if you pay for first class flights regularly, using Avios can still be a good deal.
An example of a first class British Airways booking would be: JFK to LHR for 68,000 Avios and $441 one way.
Another example and one that I’m interested in is Austin to London on the 787 in their World Traveler business/first class. It would run me 62,500 Avios & $479 one way.
If you have spent $30,000 on your British Airways Visa Signature® Card in a calendar year, you would earn the Travel Together Ticket. This would allow you to bring a passenger for free on an award ticket. But you would still have to pay for the fuel surcharges and fees. Still, that’s a pretty nice savings on the miles side.
Combining with Iberia Avios
Iberia is Spain’s biggest airline and they also use Avios. This means that you can combine/transfer Avios between the two programs. Your Iberia account does need to be open for 90 days and have some activity before you can transfer/combine miles.
The great thing about booking through the Iberia website & program is that they have lower fuel surcharges on some flights. And there’s sometimes award sales, for example, last year there was a 40% award sale on select Avios flights. And you can fly from New York to Madrid for 10,200 Avios & 64.56 euros one way in economy.
Iberia often has award fare sales. My wife and I were able to book 2 Iberia business class tickets from Madrid to Chicago for only 40,000 Avios a couple years ago!
4 Roundtrip Flights to Ireland or 5 One-Way Flights to Berlin
One of the award gems of Avios is flying Aer Lingus from Boston to Dublin for only 12,500 Avios one way, or 25,000 Avios round trip. Great deal! You can search for Aer Lingus award space on the United or Qantas websites and then call into British Airways to book.
You can also use your Avios for Air Berlin flights. New York to Berlin one way in economy is only 20,000 Avios & $5.
British Airways Avios aren’t the ideal miles for long haul or premium cabin flights, but you can still use them is some scenarios for flights to Europe, or flights in business or first class.
British Airways Avios really shine for short haul domestic flights on American Airlines, flights to Hawaii from the West Coast, and many other short distance flights worldwide. You can definitely book a lot of award flights with 100,000 Avios, so if the new limited time offer is right for you, the link is below.
