Get to Know Your Rental Car

Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Rick S. of Pickerington, Ohio, who says:

“Frequent travelers are often frequent car renters. Chances are you will not be familiar with all the ‘bells and whistles’ or lack thereof on your rental vehicle. I was so used to the auto-off function of my own car’s headlights that I forgot to turn them off on my rental car. Car lights eventually go off by themselves anyway, as I found out, when the battery dies. Luckily, I was in a casino parking lot with frequent security patrols. They gave me a jump and I was on my way. They said this is almost a daily occurrence, so be forewarned.”

A great reminder. Thanks, Rick!

  1. I didn’t leave the lights on in my 2017 Toyota Corolla LE rental car, but when I came out of a store this past weekend in AL and got in the car my battery was dead. A call to Enterprise support informed me that I had failed to purchase “Roadside Assistance” (who knew)? Thank goodness I had AAA. Later that day at the State Park where we were staying the car conked out again. We also had no cell service. A couple in the next cabin assisted us. We ed Enterprise again. Guess what? They were going to send a tow truck for me and the vehicle while the others in the party were to take UBER. Glad I didn’t have any small children with me. Our neighbors got our car going, we drove to the airport in Birmingham and switched vehicles. Either make sure you purchase Roadside Assistance or AAA and take some jumper cables.

  2. the thing i usually struggle with is figuring out how to open the gas tank. sometimes the lever is under the steering wheel, sometimes on the floor of the car, last time it was on the door … i keep thinking i’ve seen all the possible positions but still get surprised.
