Natalie and I just hired a babysitter to watch Jack a few hours a week so that we can get some solid work done. When I asked our (highly recommended) nanny if she knew CPR, she said, “I sure do and can you show you my card.” It turns out that she got her card from the Red Cross, which offers “First Aid/CPR/AED” classes around the country. In L.A. the price for a CPR class . What’s even more interesting is that she also downloaded the free —available on both  and —so that when she’s bored she can review first aid material and watch its life-saving videos.

I’ve written about the Red Cross Tornado app before, but I didn’t know about this one. It’s even more practical than the tornado app, as the emergency situations that may call for its use can occur anytime and anywhere.

The Red Cross First Aid app is available in both English and Spanish and features:

  • Simple step-by-step advice on everything including: allergies, asthma attack, bleeding, broken bone, burns, choking, concussion/head injury, diabetic emergency, distress, flu, heart attack, heat stroke, hypothermia, meningitis, poisoning/harmful substances, seizure/epilepsy, shock, stings/bites, strain and sprains, stroke, unresponsive breathing, and unresponsive not breathing.
  • Videos and animations make learning first aid fun and easy.
  • Safety tips for everything, from severe winter weather to hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes help you prepare for emergencies.
  • Preloaded content means you have instant access to all safety information at anytime, even without reception or an Internet connection.
  • Interactive quizzes allow you to earn badges that you can share with your friends and show off your lifesaving knowledge.
  • Fully integrated with 9-1-1 so you can call EMS from the app at any time.

Hopefully, none of us will ever need to use this app in a life-or-death situation, but it’s nice to know that it’s never been easier to know—and call for—first aid. You can bet that the next time I’m waiting in line to board a plane or sitting in the back of an Uber, I’ll be brushing up on my life-saving skills. As an added bonus, the app is ad-free.
