A backlogged DHS has cancelled some Global Entry appointments

Around the country, Global Entry appointments—available once you’ve applied and been conditionally approved for membership—have been to hard to get for a while. The wait is often a month or more, especially following the backup brought on by the partial government shutdown earlier this year.

This summer, things may get worse. As reported by CNN, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced in late June that it is offering limited Global Entry appointments through September 30 and has even had to cancel some existing appointments as it deals with the situation at the southern border. In a statement, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is a part of DHS, said that it is “temporarily reducing staff at Global Entry Enrollment Centers nationwide and reassigning them to support frontline traveler processing during the busy summer months.”

First of all, if you’re awaiting a Global Entry appointment that you’ve already made, check your inbox and most importantly the Trusted Traveler site to confirm you’re still on the schedule. If you’ve been conditionally approved and you’re looking to make an appointment, be aware that the wait for one may be especially long and get to booking as soon as you can. Beyond that, if you’ll be traveling internationally soon, be sure to find out if your U.S. arrival airport offers appointments on arrival (see how that works here). And if the wait is really long, you might consider following this reader suggestion to expand your appointment search and make a trip out of it!
