Chase is giving Aer Lingus travelers another reason to fly the Irish airline in the coming months. If being a 1:1 Ultimate Rewards travel partner isn’t enough already, a brand new co-brand Aer Lingus credit card is launching in the spring of 2018.
While we don’t know the exact release date of the new travel credit card, it will be very similar to the brand new for Avios benefits.
We also know the Aer Lingus Visa Signature credit card will have a $95 annual fee and zero foreign transaction fees.
What We Don’t Know Yet about the Aer Lingus Credit Card
Chase provided many details about the new upcoming Aer Lingus credit card, but there are several things we don’t know yet:
- Will the $95 annual fee be waived the first year?
- The sign-up bonus value
- If there will be an AerLingus.com booking discount
We can look at the offers of the two other Avios rewards cards, the British Airways Visa (not under Chase’s 5/24 rule) and Iberia Visa Signature (doesn’t appear to be under Chase’s 5/24 rule), but that’s pure speculation. For now, let’s focus on what we do know.
Earn Up to 3 Avios Per $1 Spent
On par with the other Avios credit cards from British Airways and Iberia, you will earn 3 Avios per $1 on the following card purchases:
- Aer Lingus
- British Airways
All remaining purchases will earn 1 Avios per $1 spent.
Annual Companion Ticket
You will receive a complimentary companion ticket when you make it least $30,000 in card purchases during the calendar year. This companion ticket is valid for one economy class seat when you book an economy ticket.
Assuming this annual companion ticket benefit is similar to the British Airways Travel Together offer, you will still have to any applicable fees and taxes. This benefit can still pay the $95 annual fee despite not being a “free” ticket.
To get an Aer Lingus companion ticket valid in any cabin class, you will need to reach the Concierge tier in the AerClub.
Priority Boarding on Flights To and From U.S.
Aer Lingus credit card owners will also enjoy priority board on every flight that goes to and from the U.S. Since this is going to most likely be the most common flight you’ll take with Aer Lingus, it’s another nice reason to consider applying for the Aer Lingus credit card when it becomes available.
Additional Travel Benefits
The Aer Lingus will be a that comes with a basket of travel benefits that can ease the nerves when your travel plans go askew.
Some of these additional benefits include:
- Secondary rental car collision and theft protection
- Roadside assistance
- Lost luggage reimbursement
- Purchase protection
These benefits come standard with every Visa Signature credit card. However, Chase can decide to offer additional value that goes above and beyond the basic Visa Signature provisions; the Chase Sapphire Preferred has primary rental car collision and theft protection that pays out for any damages before your regular auto owner’s insurance policy.
Redeeming Aer Lingus Avios
Now that you’re thinking of all the ways you can earn Avios with the Aer Lingus Visa, let’s float a few of the best ways to redeem your miles with Aer Lingus and some of the other Avios partners.
Aer Lingus belongs to the Avios rewards program. This means you can use your miles for Aer Lingus, Iberia, and British Airways flights based on the standard six zone . The shortest flights start at 4,000 Avios for an off-peak economy ticket.
Unlike British Airways, Aer Lingus isn’t a OneWorld alliance member so you won’t be able to redeem your Avios for domestic American Airlines flights at a bargain. But, you can combine your Avios and book them through British Airways; it’s an extra step but something to keep in mind when you need to fly within the U.S. on American.
You can only redeem your Aer Lingus Avios for the following airline programs:
- Aer Lingus
- British Airways
Economy Class U.S. East Coast to Ireland
Aer Lingus is one of the cheapest ways to fly to Europe using Avios. This is mostly because they don’t charge the hefty fuel surcharges. Flying Aer Lingus from the U.S. East Coast to Europe is one of the most popular Chase Ultimate Rewards redemption options but now that you can points directly from Aer Lingus, you don’t have to transfer as many of your Ultimate Rewards points to book a flight!
For an off-peak economy flight, you can 13,000 Avios from some of these Zone 5 airports:
- New York
A peak season flight in economy class costs 20,000 Avios which can still be a decent deal.
Flights From Zone 6 U.S. to Ireland
If you can’t fly from a Zone 5 airport on the U.S. East Coast, the remaining U.S. airports let you book an economy seat across the Atlantic for only 16,250 Avios in the off-peak season or 25,000 Avios during peak season. Even during peak season flying United Airlines, an economy seat costs 30,000 MileagePlus miles.
Instead, book Aer Lingus and save up to 14,000 miles per seat!
You can fly to Europe on Aer Lingus from these U.S. airports classified in Zone 6:
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco
Short-Haul European Flights
If you want to visit several countries within Europe once you land, you can fly Aer Lingus, Iberia, or British Airways for 4,000 Avios in the economy class during off-peak season. The same flights cost 4,500 Avios in peak season; yet another bargain.
Because all these flights are 650 miles or less, you don’t have to worry about paying a fuel surcharge with the British Airways or Iberia partner flights.
Fly Business Class United States to Ireland
Flying economy from North America to Ireland is a bargain, but you can still get a decent deal by flying business class as Aer Lingus is competitive with the legacy American carriers for mileage requirements and they don’t charge a fuel surcharge. Compare a business class Aer Lingus flight to a similar British Airways or Iberia offering and you’ll need to pony up a couple hundred dollars.
Business class flights are broken down into Zone 5 and Zone 6 like economy flights:
- Zone 5: 50,000 Avios off-peak and 60,000 Avios peak season
- Zone 6: 62,500 Avios off-peak and 75,000 Avios peak season
