Chase & Southwest are offering eligible California residents the chance to earn the Companion Pass after being approved and making a purchase on a new Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card. That’s right: One of the most valuable travel perks around, the , is basically being offered for FREE to California residents! All you have to do is follow these two steps to be awarded a Southwest Companion Pass:

  • Submit a application with a valid California address
  • Make one purchase before November 30, 2017

You’ll still have to pay the annual card fee for the Plus ($69) or Premier ($99) card, but, this is still a steal. It’s literally the easiest way to ever earn the Southwest Companion Pass if you live in California.

Terms and Conditions

There are a few terms and conditions for this offer. First of all, you must be a California resident. Secondly, you cannot currently own a Southwest credit card or owned one within the most recent 24 months. And the Southwest Cards do seem to fall under Chase’s 5/24 rule. Basically, if you qualify for the usual Southwest Airlines sign-up bonus offer of 40,000 miles after spending $1,000, you will automatically receive the Companion Pass.

In addition to earning the Companion Pass after your first purchase, California residents can still earn the standard bonus offer of 40,000 bonus miles by spending $1,000 in the first three months.

Once you receive the Pass, your travel companion will be able to fly only for the price of the fees and taxes, which are usually $5.60 each way, for the rest of 2017 and all of 2018. This is perfect timing as you Southwest recently announced they will begin flying to Hawaii from California in 2018.

What About the Other 49 States?

What if you live in the other 49 states?

Hopefully, Southwest will roll this offer out to a few more states soon. Until then, you can receive the standard offer of 40,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 in the first three months as a new cardholder.

If you have the itch for earning extra Southwest miles and want to hedge your bets that this offer might roll out to your state in the near future, you might consider applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred in the meantime. You can earn 2 miles on every travel and dining purchase, you can transfer your miles on a 1:1 basis to a host of airline and hotel travel programs including Southwest.
