It’s no secret that Millennials spend money differently than previous generations. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is adding new bonus categories that help maximize the Millennial lifestyle. This card is best known for earning 6% on groceries and 3% at gas stations.
You can now earn bonus points on streaming subscriptions and transit. Plus, you can enjoy a new card design with less payment technology. However, one downside is that U.S. department store purchases will no longer earn bonus rewards after July 31, 2019.
New cardmembers can earn $250 bonus cash after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
Blue Cash Preferred® Card Bonus Categories
The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express now offers four different bonus categories:
- 6% back at U.S. supermarkets (on the first $6,000 annually, then 1% back)
- 6% back on select U.S. streaming services
- 3% back at U.S. gas stations
- 3% back on buses, parking, tolls, trains, and taxi/rideshares
All remaining purchases earn unlimited 1% back. All purchase rewards are redeemable as a statement credit.
Through July 31, 2019, U.S. department store purchases earn 3% back. After this date, these purchases earn 1% back.
The bonus category changes come as older Millennials daily spending shifts a different direction. According to , Millennials between ages 31 and 38 most common daily purchases are groceries, streaming, and commuting.
It’s possible to earn unlimited 6% back on over 20 U.S. streaming services. Some of the eligible platforms include Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, and Audible. This list is far more extensive than other rewards credit cards including the American Express-issued Wells Fargo Propel.
If you’re looking for an excuse to cut the cable subscription, now is your chance.
However you commute to work, it’s more likely you can get 3% back on your commuting expenses. You still get unlimited 3% back at U.S. gas stations. It’s now possible to earn unlimited 3% back on public transit, parking, and tolls. Even rideshares including Lyft and Uber earn 3% back.
While you still don’t earn , you save money on your day-to-day transit costs.
The first $6,000 spent annually at U.S. supermarkets earns 6% back. This is the card’s only purchase category that has an annual spending limit. All purchases above the $6,000 spend mark earn unlimited 1% back until your next card anniversary. Maximizing the 6% bonus gives your $360 cash back each year.
Remember that purchases made at stores like Walmart and Target only earn 1% back on every purchase including your groceries. Earning the 6% back means making purchases at eligible U.S. stores.
The bonus category disappearing to make room for the new arrivals is 3% back at select U.S. department stores. If you plan on shopping at a department store, you have until July 31, 2019, to earn 3% bonus cash. All department store purchases earn 1% back beginning in August.
Redeeming Purchase Rewards
The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a cash back credit card. Your rewards points are redeemable for cash statement credits. Unlike some of the better-known American Express credit cards that earn Membership Rewards points, these rewards can’t be transferred to airline partners or redeemed for travel rewards.
If you’re looking for a travel rewards credit card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Capital One Venture are good cards that may fit your needs.
New Blue Cash Preferred Card Design
Say goodbye to the old Blue Cash Preferred card design with a white background and a metallic blue square in the center.
To celebrate the new bonus category additions, American Express is redesigning the card artwork. The new card design features the iconic Centurion that graces other high-end American Express credit cards including the .
This card also has less payment ability that lets you simply tap to pay for in-person purchases.
New cardmembers earn $250 bonus cash after spending $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. American Express issues the bonus as a statement credit.
Like other American Express credit cards, this bonus is only awarded once per card. Previous cardholders who earned the Blue Cash Preferred welcome bonus cannot qualify to earn the bonus a second time.
Additional Blue Cash Preferred Card Benefits
The American Express Blue Cash Preferred has several complimentary benefits that can save you money when shopping and traveling
One of the potentially most valuable shopping benefits is the free 2-day Shoprunner service at over 100 stores. Free shipping can save you money when shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, eBags, and 1-800-Flowers.
American Express will also extend the original manufacturer’s warranty on select purchases for up to 2 years. Plus, purchase protection covers new purchases up to $1,000 for 120 days for accidental damage and theft-related claims. You can file up to $50,000 in purchase protection claims each year.
If you need to return a purchase and the merchant refuses, you can also qualify for up to $300 per item if you try returning the item within 90 days.
You get secondary rental car collision damage waiver protection when declining the rental car agency insurance.
This card has a $95 annual fee (See ). However, additional user cards are free. The 6% cash back from your first $1,500 spent at U.S. supermarkets will offset the annual fee.
Pay It Plan It
On purchases $100 or higher, you have the option of choosing a Pay It Plan It payment plan tool. Purchases enrolled in these plans don’t accrue purchase APR but you pay a monthly plan fee instead. Additionally, American Express waives the plan fee on new purchases during the first 12 months.
You can have up to 3 months to pay the purchase amount. However, the total plan fees calculate upfront before enrolling in the plan.
Summary of the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express New Benefits
New and existing Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express cardmembers now earn bonus points on more of the common day-to-day purchases including streaming services and transit. Therefore, the Blue Cash Preferred continues to be one of the best credit cards for buying groceries. As mentioned previously, you earn 6% back on the first $6,000 spent annually.
