The European Countries with Strikes Planned This Week

Europe this week

If you’re traveling to or around Europe this week, you should be aware that there are several strikes expected to take place between April 14 and 18 (I know, what else is new). Of course, they’re coinciding with the busy Easter holiday weekend.

by UHC Global, “In France, SNCF railway workers will strike from 14 to 18 April; cancellations and delays are expected as soon as 1900 local time (1700 UTC) on 13 April, and the labor action will end at 0800 local time on 18 April. While trains will continue operating at minimum capacity, travelers should expect services to be significantly affected.”

In Ireland, Bus Éireann workers are that’s been going on for almost a month. Dublin travelers should see an increase of traffic and make alternate arrangements to get around.

Workers who refuel aircrafts in Italy are planning to strike from 1400 to 1800 (2pm to 6pm) local time on April 18. This will likely cause delays at all of Italy’s airports. Also, Florence travelers can expect many businesses to be closed on April 16 and 17 due to a general citywide strike.

If you’re traveling through a Portugal airport between April 13 and 17, take notice: The ANA Aeroportos de Portugal is that a strike has been announced for security companies. “Passenger processing at national airports may suffer. Therefore, ANA recommends that all passengers travelling during that period request information from their airline companies, and follow the guidelines provided. We also suggest that luggage be checked-in so as to reduce the number of items that require screening when going through security.” Sounds like you better show up extra early since the security lines will probably be long. And remember to never check your valuables in your luggage (medicine, electronics, jewelry…).

Ground handlers at Spain’s fifth-busiest airport, Alicante-Elche Airport, between April 14 and 17. Hopefully, the strike will be called off.

Good luck!

  1. Good tips. Been to various places in Europe over the past 10-15 years. Not sure that in any 14-30 day trip, we have not run into a “strike” or major protest or big religious holiday in some community, that always shuts something down. So much to see and do, just kind of work around it.

  2. Great travel roundup item. You should publish this monthly.
