Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Jeff M., who offers a fun and possibly helpful idea for couples:
“Hey Johnny, I just wanted to share a thing my wife and I do for planning vacations that can save a ton of money and be fun at the same time.
When we got married in 2003 we decided to go to at least one different place each year for vacation. We did not have much money then and planning vacations together always made it more costly, because by the time we agreed on the place and the time, any super deal was gone. So we decided that if one person had total control over planning each year, that person could unilaterally plan the vacation and thereby take full advantage of any short-lived deals.
We traded off each year. Whoever is the vacation mayor that year gets to plan it start to finish without consulting the other. So, for example, if an airplane deal pops up for a great rate to Bora Bora, that person could jump on it before it is gone, plan the rest of the trip around it and then tell the other person. We saved a lot of money this way and went to some great places. In addition, the way you tell the other person can be an art and event unto itself. Pretty cool.”
