Residents of nine states will not be able to travel with only driver's licenses in 2018In 2018, a big change is coming for residents of nine U.S. states. As written in Travel + Leisure, “Beginning Jan. 22, 2018, travelers from nine states will no longer be able to travel with only their driver’s licenses.

Residents of Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington will have to use alternate ID forms (passport, military ID, or permanent resident card) to pass TSA security checkpoints—even for domestic travel.”

The shift comes as parts of the 2005 REAL ID Act go into effect (some after earlier extensions). Security standards for identification practices in the U.S. are (and have been) changing. Writes T + L: “In order for states to pass the government’s security standards, they must verify every ID applicant’s identity, put anti-counterfeit technology in the production of the card and conduct background checks on those who issue driver’s licenses.”

The nine states may still receive extensions, which would change the date by which their residents will need to bring alternative ID to fly. Stay tuned, and see this TSA page for more on permitted forms of ID.
